Big Disappointmentment!
Had a hankering for a truly great chili dog so we braved driving to U St. There was no room even to stand in line, so we thought we'd waid our turn because it had to be good. For $17.70 we got two chili dogs, one fry and two milkshakes. The chili tasted if it came out of a generic chili can and spruced up with some tobasco sauce. Had heartburn before we left the restaurant. Have no idea how they lasted 50 years.

It is a great place, but.....
It's a great place, and is a landmark in DC, but don't let that fool you, Ben's Chili Bowl isn't going to be winning any chili cookoff's anytime soon. It is definately a place I would go to after a night of drinking, but that is about it. The prices were reasonable and I did enjoy the atmosphere and service. I do think that it is a cultural landmark in the area and should always be designated as such.

DC Classic
Ben's Chili Bowl offers up some of the cities best value food and has a real local spirit. An absolute surprise is their vegetarian options -- veggie burgers and veggie chili. Food is made fast, to order, and tastes great. Pictures of Bill Cosby adorn their walls...what's not to love! Definitely get a milkshake and share an order of chili fries with your table. Don't forget to write your name in the bathroom (it's a giant chalkboard).

Great casual cheap Southern style dining
Ben's Chili Bowl is a great Southern style hub for the ethnocentric on U Street between 12th & 13th Streets. The food and the service are both great! Prices are extremely low, and it is a great experience for anyone.
