Nine of us after mahjong game, went for dinner. I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of food at China Kingdom, McLean, Va. Excellent xiao-lon-pao (small steam buns), authentic smoked fish appetizer, ...... each dish is of its own flavor. The chef is from Shanghai (they do also have a Cantonese chef) and he came out for a brief chat. He has been in the States for 23 years but according to our friend he has been at this restaurant only for 6 months. So, enjoy the good Shanghainese food before he leaves. Note: this was in Sept., 2011

This is my absolute favorite restaurant but not of the buffet but because of a couple of items. I only judge restaurants basically on a very select number of dished. And this resturant hits those dishes on the mark with near perfection. My two absolutely favorite dishes is the soupy buns and the baby clams with black bean sauce. Both are near perfect. The soupy buns are the best next to Joe's Shanghai in New York City. Full of juice and the skin is perfect, not cakey thick. The clams are perfect, the sauce is thick and garlicky not watered down. I also love their fish filet and fried tofu dish off the chinese special menu.

We've been eating at China Kingdom since it was located next to a High's and called Shafen. The atmosphere, as others has noted, is not the best, and took a hit when the restaurant expanded and began to offer buffet. The food, though, has been consistently excellent. We often get carryout or delivery, and have always been pleased with the quality of the food and the service. The buffet is what you'd expect from a buffet, frankly. It's all you can eat and a result the quality sometimes suffers, in part depending on the number of diners, but it offers decent variety with Mongolian or standard Chinese fare. I generally prefer to just order off the menu.

One server for the whole room (Friday night!). Drinks not served (not even tea) till after the meal was there. Buffet food was old and sauce solidified. YUCK. Don't bother!

You should only go to this place to either get take away or go for the buffet. The atmosphere is not great. But the food is great for a pretty good price. I would go to this place over places like PF Changs any day.
