Clare & Don's Beach Shack

Their soups are outstanding. Their seafood is also very good. Their burgers are among the best. Their prices are very reasonable. I have been there about a dozen times and I have't experienced any significant problems. And, they pay the taxes, where else do you get really good food w/o paying taxes? I love their veggies including homemade mashed potatoes, brown rice, et al. I don't see how anyone can complain about long waits to get a table when they are crowded. They have never asked anyone to leave to accommodate my schedule. My family has never waited over 15 minutes even on a Friday night.

Clare and Don's Beach Shack was recommended to us by a friend that knew the place well and said that the place was kid friendly with great service but it was anything but... When we came there (around 5pm) the outside had a decent crowd so we asked for a table that would accomodate seven of us but asked for an inside table. The hostess asked us if the entire party was here. We said that the the other half would be here in about 10 minutes but we would like a table inside so we could settle our 6 and 10 year old. She stated that because we were all not here at once that we could not be seated. This puzzled us a bit since any other restaurant would seat us regardless of this and we could secure a table. My assumption was that they were packed and had no room. The hostess continued and said that we could go to the bar and wait till our entire party came and only then would seat us. She would find us when we all showed. Puzzled we said OK and started to go inside towards the bar. Needless to say the experience was doomed since we had very poor service. The food could have been better if the service was friendly but sadly it was very average. It left a very bad taste (so to speak) in our mouth. The restaurant is not really kid-friendly since the baby seat was not accessible for a carrier and the buckle was broken on the seatbelt. The manager comped us two appetizers (fried pickles and hush-puppies) and the waitress (assuming after a talk by the manager) was much more reserve but the vibe of tense was still in the air with the sense that now she was forced to put on a show with a painted smile. It would have been preferable for a waitress change and a "do over." The manager could have gotten away by comping the initial nachos and drinks since this was the initial flare-up of the situation. I was not even looking for comped food just competent service with a genuine smile of wanting to make the customer happy with the experience. He did apologize for the actions and responses of the waitress but this experience sadly will keep us away from this restaurant. I wish I could give a better response but this was not a great night out and the staff made it poorer. I have never heard of a policy that denies paying customers a table and service until all of the people show. Is this normal protocol for Falls Church? Our friend was embarrassed that she recommended the place in the first place.

Clare and Don's Beach Shack is a GREAT addition to Falls Church. Great Food. Live music outdoor patio. We had a blast. The coldest beer. (on ice for hours the bartender said). We will be back

This place is a fantastic place for everybody. I love that the menu caters to all types of appetites. The food is always delicious and you can really tell that everything is homemade. Kids of all ages seem to always have a good time. You can tell that the owners really want everyone to have a great time.

I've given this "shack" a try twice in about as many months. The first time I waited forty-five minutes for a table only to be told we could not be seated in the available table after all, as the fourth member of our party had not yet arrived. Restaurant policy, I was told. Last night the fish was dry and over cooked, as were the hamburgers. And the Pino Grigio was served room temperature until we complained and asked for some chilled. The service staff was again extremely rude a waitstaff person actually tapped me on the shoulder several times instead of merely saying excuse me when she wanted to get past me. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone expecting to have a decent meal.

The food is OK, but the service is not good. The two times I've eaten here the servers seemed as if they were doing me a favor more bored than enthusiastic. In an area where there are lots of good restaurants, having a mediocre serving staff is not a good idea. The food is pretty good but nothing special.
