My partner and I ate at M Cafe Bar for a Friday night date, and overall I felt it was a pretty good addition to the hip 14th Street restaurants, but it is clearly still working out the kinks. First of all, it was packed when we arrived, so that's a good sign that there's buzz surrounding a new restaurant. We were seated promptly, but service was not prompt. We waited a good 10 minutes to even be acknowledged, which is a rather long time when you're paying DC prices. Just coincidentally, the manager was the one who sat us, and when he asked how we were doing 15 minutes later, we told him that we actually hadn't even gotten waters by that point. To his credit, he immediately remedy the situation by putting a new server on our table because our original server was busy with a large party in the back room. My partner had the prosciutto and green salad to start, and while the individual ingredients combined to make some very good bites, there were way too many stems on the greens. We figured that they were just so busy that the salad station just couldn't spend the time to actually work the salad greens properly. For entrée, I had read the TripAdvisor reviews where someone said that the squid ink and lobster pasta was really good – so that's what I ordered. I actually really love squid ink, but for me, this this had too much marinara sauce in it, so you couldn't really taste the squid ink. My partner had the pork loin, and unfortunately it was way overcooked. The manager insisted that he make another one after we pointed out this obvious error, and we consented. The pork loin that came next was actually extremely delicious and properly cooked. We ordered dessert, since all their desserts are freshly made by pastry chef. The cheesecake was good -- it was like a little tart, but the mango gelatine inside was really random and didn't really fit with the flavors. Overall, I think that M Cafe Bar was a fun night out, if a little bit pricey for what you get. The best part about this restaurant is that it has Peroni on draft.
