    So Whatever!

This is the second time my friends and I ate/ drank at Mate. The first time the sushi/ sashimi was good, service fine. I went there tonight and it has taken a turn for the worse. Service staff were snooty for no apparent reason, the sushi was dry and drinks could have been better. If Mate is trying to be a more sophisticated joint it has failed miserably. There is no way this place would be in business in NY, it's way below average. If you want good sushi try Sushi Taro.

    Pleasant Surprise

Like usual, my MenuPages pick ended up being a good choice. This was my first time in DC and the first visit to a restaurant I picked off of fellow readers' reviews. Good job and thanks :) The food is indeed great, I was a particular fan of the jalapeno white tuna and salmon appetizers (yup, had to have both). there is something about the torched pepper and raw fish that was quite amazing... the rest of the rolls were aok too, drinks were tasty, yet not very strong, and the crowd was good the place looks super-coo, with the bright red walls and exposed concrete, and the whole 'spacious' thing is a good change from new york's hole in the wall establishments. overall, very very nice...

    It was good

I had volcano (cooked) sushi for the first time there and LOVED it. The decor is nice, nothing special by way of DC ultra themed lounges and eateries so they fall in line w/all the trendy spots-nice drink menu too.

    Sushi-liciouss!!

This place may be snooty but so what? Not everything needs to be a sloppy drunk Georgetown hangout. I am one of the “snobs” and I like this place when I come to visit from NYC. Food is great- best sushi I have had in DC. Volcano roll is unique (and delicious) and the rolls are innovative and fresh. It’s a chill place to hang out and they have great mojitos. Make yourself up very pretty and go check it out. There is nothing wrong with attitude!

Maybe people shoudl stick to happy hour?

I had a great time when I went here. I didn't have an experience like the other posters and I'm guessing it's because I arrived there around 5 for happy hour. There were plenty of seats and the bartender was great. He was very attentive and personable. No, I'm not some hot chick who would get a lot of attention from the bartender so that wasn't it. He just seemed like a genuinely nice guy who knows how to take care of patrons. When he had to take a snack break a female took his place and she was just as good. The specialty rolls were delicious and the cheap mojitos were also pretty good. I'm thinking it might be a good idea to stick to an early happy hour meet up if you can.
