Mrs K's Toll House
Posted by johne on 06/27/2014
after decades of going to Mrs K i must say tonight was a disaster. One dinner came almost a half hr late. The coffees came at different times. Worst of all, the manager was obviously stressed and incapable of dealing with my embarrassment for the guests that I hosted. They need to increase number of waiters or cap the number of reservations.

So sad to have experienced poor service yesterday! The management did not even care. Tea and coffee were not warm. Room was poorly lit and bathroom dirty. After a 30+ year tradition if holiday luncheons, we will be taking our business elsewhere!

We had a reservation at noon and I had really looked forward to coming since I read the LUNCH menu online and picked out what I wanted to eat. Our group consisted of 7 Red Hat ladies and we sat in the room facing the main road. Here is the item I was looking forward to: Grilled Polenta With Wild Mushroom Ragout cremini mushrooms, oyster mushrooms, shiitake mushrooms, spinach and pine nuts sautéed in olive oil and garlic, finished with frangelico and served over grilled polenta. When the waitress came around I asked for this, and she said it is only served during dinner and I said no, it was on the LUNCH menu, and the other girls said so also. I was told no, no it was on the dinner menu. I asked her if I could have it for LUNCH anyway and she said she would ask the kitchen . She came back and said sure they would make it. (she said nothing else about the dish. If she said no it wont be the same dish, I would have ordered something else) When she came with my dish, it was polenta on the bottom, sun dried tomatos, artichoke quartered in a tomato liquid, and a tablespoon of spinach. I told the waitress that it wasnt what I ordered and she said it has polenta! I said its supposed to have mushrooms and spinach and she said no, this was the dish. She had an I dont care attitude the whole time. Not a friendly person at all. and The lady at the front area gave us dirty looks when we left. To say we were unhappy is an understatement and we will never go there again.

Well, I just read the previous review and I must say nothing was exaggerated. Mrs. K's Toll House is truly a treasure. I got married here in August of 2006 and still have beautiful memories of this special day. There was nothing to complain about and everyone invited was impressed with everything. You don't know what your missing until you come and try it out yourself.

I've driven by this place a number of times. I had no idea what I was missing. This place seems great for every and any occasion. The atmosphere is cozy, the food was to-die-for and the service was impeccable. We had a wonderful view of the beautiful gardens while we ate. Now what we ate was, in itself, a joyous adventure. Their menu was a full four course treat. I personally indulged in their awesome creole-style shrimp to start things off. Then I savored their pear and mesclun salad. Right in between the salad and entree they brought out, what seemed to be, lemon sherbert, for a pallet cleanser. That set us up perfectly for our entrees. I had a dish called "Seafood Champagne." This dish was amazing to say the least. Every bite called for another. It was just loaded with a rainbow full of flavors. My date had two crab cakes that were out of this world. The first was so big and it barely had any filler inside, so we had to take the second one home. Turned out to be a great mid-night snack. After our entrees, it was time for dessert. My date had what was called "Tollhouse Pie" while I had the "Lemon Shortcake." Both desserts were so good. We planned on just taking a few bites and bringing the rest home, but that just didn't come to fruition. We ended up eating them both and they weren't small portions either. We topped it all off with a little Port wine and a B&B cordial to aid in the digestion. It was a perfect finisher. I'm salivating as I'm writing this. There was literally a party going on in my mouth from the first bite of my appetizer until well after dessert. And the service and the staff were amazing. Its difficult to find good service anymore and they went well beyond that. They were very generous, approachable, and real. Its been a long time since I've been this satisfied with a dining experience. They've definitely earned many, many more visits from me. Mmmm mmm so good!!!
