Not good enough
We ordered tom yum, barbeque pork with rice and pad thai. We were expecting a grilled pork on rice, instead, we got a fried pork with bbq sauce, it tasted more like general tso's than a bbq. the tom yum soup is full of canned mushroom, just doesn't taste special and it's not worth the price on the menu. The pad thai lacks flavor, I was expecting a bit more peanut flavor in it, but it seemed more like the sauce of their pork bbq and pad thai almost have the same taste. I could have eaten in a fastfood restaurant and have been more satisfied with it.

Not so good
I find myself frequenting Penang less every year. The quality has steadily declined. The cooks are cutting corners and quality has gotten to the point that I question if another visit is merited. It is sad - Bethesda has lost an interesting restaurant to mediocracy. Time for Penang to move to a shopping mall.

Go for the food!
Choose the Malaysian specialties...and you will have a real treat. The Chinese food is..well...Chinese food. Nothing too special. The service is ok, but the ambiance is kind of barn-like. Perfect for take out! But don't go there for intimacy! Prices are just right.

Great place - like being in Malaysia
We love this place. It is like home cooking - rather like hawker center cooking. It is as close to the real deal as you can get in the DC area. We love the fast service, the wide [select]ion, the great sweet, spicy and savory tastes. The belanchan kang kung is a favorite but given that other places no longer serve kang kung - this is as good as it can get. Kang kung is no longer allowed (as its invasive) so whatever they have is great with me. This is a fabulous gem in bethesda and feels like you're sitting in a beach house in Malaysia.

The Best
I love all types of Asian food and this place is definitely my favorite. The food is great, the servers are friendly and I take all my friends here and they all love it. Must try the roti canai, chicken satay, and house special chicken - it is amazing. I try to have something new every time I go and I have never been disappointed. If you're in Bethesda, you gotta give this place a look.

Usually good, sometimes not
We usually love eating here, only wishing they had real peanut cake (the version they serve here is a pale shadow of the real thing). But this time, the kangkong belacan was piled high with thick, unchewable stems. When we notified the waitress, she said apparently that's what they got in the market, just our bad luck. I asked her if she would herself choose to serve such a poor selection to her guests, or if she would discard the poorer sections instead, she just repeated what she said before. This incident has made me a little more wary of what they might try to pass on to their customer. On the bright side, the hainanese chicken was good as usual, as well as the roti canai.
