Easily the best gyro sub I have ever eaten. don’t forget to ask for grilled onions and old bay fries. And if you want to go healthy, the gyro salad is terrific.

Was staying at the Doubletree across the street and came over for some takeout. Cashier handed me my change (bunch of singles) folded in half without counting it out. He then abruptly walked away from the register towards the back area. I quickly counted and realized it was a dollar short. After I called out to him three or four times he finally heard me and came back and gave me the missing dollar without further incident. Of course this all could have been an innocent mistake but then again perhaps they had me pegged as a tourist. When I finally got the food (I paid ahead of time) I noticed that the styrofoam container they served the food in was partially melted on the inside. Perhaps the cooks metal spatula came into contact with it as he was sliding the food in. Needless to say I will never go back. Shame because I like the atmosphere of old timey lunch counters and diners and sometimes go out of my way to patronize them lest they all close up for good.

An essential lunch counter. Find a dish you like and order it without surcease on future visits. Ned has perfected the gyro with this novel technique: he roasts, then cubes (not shaves) the lamb, portions it, and finishes it on the griddle when you order your sandwich. Even Einstein, with his special (1905) and general (1919) theories of relativity, didn't think of this. I rated the food 4.5 (not 5.0) only because I've tried so few items there. Princeton has its Institute for Advanced Studies (Einstein's refuge after emigrating here) Bethesda has Peter's Carryout.

Even though I now live in New York, I miss this place. Great food, great service, Ned, Bob and Manny-- the guys behind the counter love the customers and are always willing to talk about the Redskins or leave you alone if you so desire. My favorite: Grilled chicken, lettuce, tomatoes, and Russian dressing!
