My family is from Bari, Italy. I know Marco (the PoR owner) is also from there - we've discussed it numerous times over a glass of Pasano wine. His Italian food is authentically done; pinwheel sweet sausage to die for from NYC; sepia gilled - perfect ; the calamari light and tasty; fried schmelts numerous and lightly battered; his pizza(s) ALL are tremendous - real Napolitan-style - his ossobucco wonderful everything with great durum-semolina pasta cooked al dente. Over 1000 visits in 28 years and never disappointed. Marco you're the best in metro DC.

We live in ohio & have been coming to POR for 25years. We've traveled a lot; Europe U.S. etc. This is my favorite restaurant in the world! Same waiter(Pepe) & owner Marco treat us like family.White pizza, peppers, pasta (always perfectly cooked) simple red sauce, etc, etc. Roast veal!! roast chicken!! & rhumcake! The best.

The first time I had their stuffed goose at Christmas, I cried. I've cried every Christmas since then, it is so wonderful. Prices have gone up since I became a regular 25 years ago, but it is still a great deal and the friendly atmosphere is unmatched. If I am depressed I go there just to be cheered, and of course the food (white pizza (with cheese), liver and onions, everything else) makes it a celebration of life.

My parents started taking us here in the 70s and we have been regulars ever since. RARELY DO WE ORDER ANYTHING BUT PIZZA. The PIZZA has NO EQUAL. Not in NYC, not in Italy. We have searched, believe me. I live on the West Coast and fly back their pizza every time I come to DC to see family. My college roommate, after 15 years of hearing me laud this legendary pizza, responded to her first bite with, "It exceeds the hype.". Order the white pizza WITHOUT cheese AND a cheese and tomato pizza. Sublime and the essence of first rate. Both pizzas travel and freeze well, but there is nothing like eating it fresh. The service is efficient and polite. We love the staff, many of whom have been there for over a decade. The prices are the lowest anywhere.

My husband and I used to love the PoR. We've been away from the area a long time. We were very excited about visiting again but found it a sad disappointment. Prices are still good. Wine still comes in water glasses (no longer jelly glasses). The food, however, was dismal. Nothing like we remembered.

I've been a patron of Pines of Rome before I knew what the word ment. I had the privilege of being exposed to the finer restaurants of the DC area when I was a child. As a family we would go to PoR every Friday and spend hours there enjoying the food and staff. I was just there last night 12/28/09 and it was as good as I remember since (last year). The key at PoR is to order the SPECIALS...not off the menu. Of course the egg plant, clams and linguine are fantastic! But the specials are the most delightful items you will eat. For the last 30+ years I've had only 2 waiters...The owner who hasn't seen us (as a family) for many many years could remember exactly what my Mom & Dad would order each Friday and inquired "where have you been and when are you coming back"... You must judge for yourself and please don't let negative comments sway your choice of the best Italian Restaurant in the DC area.
