Not worth it
We live near Taj Mahal and decided to try it as opposed to Heritage India based on other MP reviews (there seemed to be more negative reviews for Heritage than Taj Mahal). I got carry out so I can only attest to what I saw walking into the dining room- dated, stuffy but a nice second floor area. The carry out service was prompt and the waitstaff friendly. The food was an utter disappointment. It was just processed chicken (I had chicken tikka masala) and my boyfriend and I split the appetizer sampler. Both were middling to poor not falvorful, not enjoyable and just boring, not Indian at all. I can walk here in 1 minute and I will not ever go again or recommend it to anyone I know.

Disappointing
I went to Taj Mahal after reading the positive reviews on Menu Pages. When I first entered, I was put off by the old, pink decor and the graying wallpaper. However, restaurants with bad decor can still have good food. When the food arrived (fish tikka masala and daal) that wasn't the casethe food was just as poor as the decor. The fish had no flavor and the daal was mediocre. The naan was the best part of the meal, and that was only OK too. I would not recommend Taj Mahal to anyone. It was nothing like home cooked, and not even as good as the average mediocre Indian restaurant.

Lovely atmosphere, good Indian staples
Definitely a hidden gem. The atmosphere is great, very pretty and quiet (it never seems all that full, which surprises me), and really great service. Very reliable Indian dishes - no crazy interpretations of the classics, just, the classics. Not a revolutionary culinary experience, but consistently tasty and the price is great. Food is as good as Heritage India next door, for considerably less money and it comes with considerably friendlier service. Tip - the Malai Kofta is delicious, and my boyfriend loves the Lamb Korma.

Best Indian Lunch Buffet in the City
This one has outlasted the biggest names in Washington restauants. Same location since 1965! I eat here at least once a week.. super, friendly staff who welcomes one like family, good, freshly prepared food, both veg and non veg, and unlike many places, the choice changes daily. And unlike so many Washington restaurants, it's quiet. What more do you want for $9.95?

HIdden gem
Eating at Taj Mahal is like visiting relatives from India. The food tastes like home cooking -nothing fancy, but you love eating it. It's possible to have a private conversation because there is no clatter or loud music and the tables are well spaced. Great business lunch place.

Food
Got this through delivery-- which was quick--however, after that--thumbs down...this is the missing link between nutrition and a meal---why bother selling Indian food if you clearly have know idea how to make it---and at $12 an entree it is not exactly a bargin either...bad chicken masala---I will never get food from here again.
